I am interested to write about normal things in an abnormal way
I think that's what I have figured out in the past almost 2 months of focused writing and trying out different voices and genres.
I relish in the contrast, shock, and the reader's wondering what's happening. There's so much promise in starting with "Water flows in the river behind my mother's house and it never stops. One day it did, and it knocked on my door."
I mean, that's not good by any stretch. Just to illustrate my point.
A supernatural phenomenon, told in the most flat, deadpan way.
I recently listened to a Cambridge professor talking about writing about river. He was ridiculed by his kids "well, duh" because thats precisely it, I mean sure, a river?
Two years ago when I was writing a short story for a competition, I had thought of this too. But not as specific. I thought that I should be able to write the vivid imagery of human secretion. There was a plot line in my story that could've used it. But I abandoned it because of time constraints.
I think I am picking that up again now, though, let's make it a bit more palatable and fantasy-like.
We all need a bit of fantasy in this day and age.
I will update the progress. I have one short story that I need to finish by end of month. I will probably write about a river. Or not. But definitely making the contrast sing.
